The Brother MFC-290C is a basic multifunction inkjet printer for the home with user-friendly functions for professionals. While color reproduction may be better when printing photos, the Brother MFC-290C is sufficient for printing documents and school assignments. The Brother MFC-290C features a one-line front panel LCD display that makes it easy to select basic copy, scan, and fax functions. Unlike the HP Officejet J4580 All-in-One, the Brother MFC-290C has a PictBridge-compatible USB port, as well as slots for SD, xD and MemoryStick memory cards.

Print speed is slower than normal for an inkjet. That was most noticeable in our normal quality text document print test, where a single page took 26 seconds to appear. We've noticed this with other Brother inkjets. This is especially problematic in MFPs suitable for home office use. The 3ppm normal quality print speed is very slow, especially compared to the increasing number of compact mono laser MFPs, which are much faster and only slightly more expensive.

The interface of the Brother scanner is simple, but does everything we have. You can select a resolution and bit depth, and choose from a variety of preset sizes. There is no automatic size detection, so you have to select the scanning area yourself for items of unusual size. Settings really help intermediate scan and the interface stays open after it's done, which makes it easy to scan a collection of documents. The CCD scanner has a maximum optical resolution of 1,200x2,400dpi and a color depth of up to 32-bit. Unfortunately our low-resolution document scans look good and capture text accurately, our high-resolution photo scans suffer from bad shadows and jagged spots.
